What carbohydrates should be on your plate?

Our regular home made meal will consist of more carbohydrates than other nutrients. How do we get the best balanced diet? Keep these tips in mind.

First, watch the carbs. People with diabetes need to reduce their carbohydrate intake, as do people who are trying to lose weight. Generally, women should eat about 30 - 45 grams of carbohydrates, and men 45 - 60 grams. Choose complex carbs rather than simple ones (found in juice, aerated drinks, candy, etc.). Go in for whole grains in the complex carbohydrate category - avoid white rice, white bread or white pasta.

Now look at your plate as a whole. 1/4 of your meal should contain the good carbohydrates that you have chosen. 1/2 should be non starchy veggies (avoid most root vegetables). The remaining 1/4 must contain lean proteins (eggs, chicken, fish, tofu or dals).
