Posted on: 06/Jan/2021 9:16:50 AM
The rains have been pouring in Chennai and its suburbs since the Monday evening is well known to us. At 8:30 pm on Tuesday, Nungambakkam recorded 82.5mm of rain and Meenambakkam recorded 103 mm of rain.

It is very clear that in the last 100 years this would be the first time Chennai would be set to receive the highest ever rainfall in January. This has grabbed many eyeballs now.

On 15th January in the year 1915, Chennai city received 212.9mm of rainfall and this has been the highest ever rainfall till now. It was brought out by an official data on Tuesday noon that Chennai had an average of 114.6mm rains. In the month of January, the monthly average rainfall in Chennai is just 17 mm.

As per the weather blogger, Mr. Pradeep John, on 5th January Chennai received 7 times the average rainfall of January in less than 15 hours.

Thunderstorms with moderate rains:
There would be thunderstorms with moderate rains in places over coastal TN, Chennai, Puducherry, Karaikal etc on 6th of January. In some interior places in TN, light to moderate rains with thunderstorms would occur. Isolated places over The Nilgiris, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram etc would have heavy rains. This was pointed out by Mr. S. Balachandran, director, RMC, Chennai.

Intensive connective clouds caused heavy rains:
Information collected is that Chennai received heavy rains due to the presence of intensive connective clouds over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpet and Kancheepuram districts.

According to the weather blogger, Mr. K. Srikanth, the rains would push towards the south of AP and due to this the rains would reduce in Chennai in the next 24 hours.

Low lying places in Chennai were flooded due to the sudden heavy rains and many residents faced difficulties. Increased inflow of water to the catchment areas has resulted in the water release from reservoirs like Chembarambakkam, Poondi and Red Hills.

The heavy rains in Chennai have led to many issues for the motorists and other office-goers. Many important residential places like Velachery, Madipakkam, Perungudi, Dsaidapert, Guindy, Anna Nagar, K.K. Nagar, Kodungaiyur, Vyasarpadi, Perambur, Purasawakkam, Kellys, Koyambedu, Egmore etc were inundated.
