Posted on: 09/Dec/2019 9:37:05 AM
To make the students of the government schools in TN well versed with the new technology AI or Artificial Intelligence, the government school curriculum would include AI subject.

It is now brought put that AI would be introduced in a phased manner from the next academic year to the students belonging to the classes 6th to 9th of government schools in TN. This was as per the school education department.

A senior official mentioned about how many students have come across AI through science projects. He added that once when AI becomes part of the curriculum then the students would be able to explore in-depth. The superb piece of information is tech giants such as Microsoft and Google would be playing their part here. It is revealed that the school education department has been in touch with these famous IT companies for the sake of creating a comprehensive course in AI for the students. There are discussions going on now about making AI as an elective subject.

The students of class 6 would be introduced to the basics of information and communication technology plus AI and as the students go to higher classes then the course builds on. The information is the students would have access to all the required resources and would get a chance to work with the experts. New teachers would be recruited by the department and they would be trained by the experts from partnering tech giants for the course.

It was pointed out by an official that the state government had announced in 2018 that it would set up well equipped high tech labs and smart classrooms in 6000 government schools in TN at a cost of Rs 462.62 crores. He threw light about the presence of these labs in most schools now and hinted that the project is underway in other schools also.

It must be noted that in many private schools there is more time allotted to teach major topics under AI and computer science and in the government schools, it is totally different. The government schools do not have internet facility plus ICT hardware and basic computer science-related infrastructure. A digital divide has been created now between the students of private and government schools in TN.

For teaching advanced computer skills to the students, few government schools occasionally tie-up with organizations. It would be more beneficial for the students when AI is made as part of the curriculum. This was as per some educators.
