Waste segregation is being carried out in north Chennai

Posted on: 09/Dec/2019 9:46:03 AM
In many parts belonging to north Chennai, segregation of waste had begun and this was confirmed by the official of the Chennai Corporation.

The five zones of the north region of the corporation such as Tiruvottriyur, Manali, Tondiarpet, Royapuram and Madhavaram generate about 1200 to 1300 tonnes of garbage a day and out of this 950 to 1000 tonnes of garbage are dumped at the Kodungaiyur dumping ground. This was according to the officials.

It must be noted that Manali (zone 2) is zero garbage zone because waste generated is segregated and taken to the micro compost centre and not dumped to Kodungaiyur dumping ground. The point is it generates 30 tonnes of garbage per day and is one of the smallest zones. This was according to an official.

Important information is zone 3 (Madhavaram) has reached 70% garbage segregation and would reach 100% by the end of December. The official later spoke about how zone 1 (Tiruvottriyur) that generates 170 to 180 tonnes a day segregates 30 to 32% of waste collected and hoped that zero garbage status would be achieved in 2 to 3 months. The point to be noted here is zone 4 (Tondiarpet) and zone 5 (Royapuram) pose a challenge. Per day, zone 4 generates 450 tonnes and zone 5 generates 500 tonnes and just 15% of waste gets segregated now.

It is important to note that solid waste management is complex in these zones and steps have been taken at the micro-levels. Information collected is 2 to 3 wards have been taken up as part of a pilot project in each of these zones. It is brought out that wards 34, 42 and 48 in zone 4 and wards 53, 57 in zone 5 are part of a pilot project.

To understand the efforts needed for waste management and challenges and to replicate in other divisions, a study is being taken up in the selected wards. Micromanagement at the street levels is included in the study.

Official explained how the door-to-door collection of waste has been taken up and how more tricycles have been deployed sector-wise. He added that the weight of the garbage collected every day was measured and then carried to the micro compost pits. The important information is in ward 57 from 3% segregation of waste they have reached 30% now. He concluded that overall 20 to 22% segregation of garbage was achieved and efforts were taken.
