For metro rail extension in Chennai, laying of tracks done now

It is known that phase-1 project belonging to the Chennai Metro is nearly completed. The extension project that extends from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar is given importance now. The latest news is tracks laying work is being carried out and the speed of the work has increased now. It is revealed that by the month of June in 2020 this track would be ready.

It is worthy to note that the phase-1 extension project would cost an amount of Rs 3770 crores and it covers a 9 km stretch from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar. It passes through places like Korukkupet, Sir Thyagaraja College, Tondiarpet, Tollgate, Thangal, Gowri Ashram and Thiruvottiyur. The point is the stretch would be partially underground. It was just last week that track laying work began and it is said that the contractor Apurvakriti Infrastructure would carry out the work for 18km.

The official belonging to CMRL expressed his thoughts about the track laying works and said it would get over by the end of this year 2019 and there would be enough time available for the trials. He then spoke about the finishing of the construction of tunnel between Washermanpet and Korukkupet. He hinted about the work about building a viaduct for the elevated stretch from Korukkupet to Wimco Nagar. As many as 9 stations along the corridor are being constructed now. The point is the phase 1 extension project was announced after the delay in the first phase. Initially soil tests were carried out and then the state government gave its approval later. The important information collected was it took nearly 6 years for the centre to give its approval and the funds to carry out the work.

According to the officials belonging to CMRL it is very clear that the commuters would be highly benefited after the stretch gets completed. The point is the commuters looking for alternative to MTC buses would be able to use mass rapid transit to travel to the city. The commuters would have the option of switching over to MRTS or suburban trains easily since the stretch passes through the Chennai Central.
