Second phase of Metro likely to get approval in March

The detailed project report of second phase of the Chennai metro rail project is being studied by the Centre and Japan International Cooperation Agency. According to what the state believes, by March 2018, the plan shall get approved, says Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam.
Addressing a valedictory function of ‘Chennai as Global City’, held at the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), the deputy CM added that the DPRs shall soon be set up at multiple corridors of the bus rapid transit systems. Works to draft a detailed report about integrating MRTS and metro rail is in advanced state, he adds.
At a cost of Rs 2,370.56 crore, over 34,580 houses shall be constructed for the urban poor, said the deputy CM. About 2000 years ago, the areas alongside the east coast of India served as an international trading center that bustled with trades. During the wave of globalization, it was in 1963 that the modern city was formed. That is why Chennai is referred to as global city, he adds.
The inclusion of Chennai city among the list of creative cities by the UNESCO is one more feather on the hat for all the people in the city and Chennai itself. As far as the cumulative foreign direct investment flow is concerned, Chennai stands third, and the city is second in terms of contributing to the country’s GDP.
The 2-day event saw participation from over 70 members of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), Metro water, traffic police and several others from distinguished government departments.
Ram Venkataramani, the president of MCCI, addressing the gathering, said a steering committee is formed. It will set up an urban observatory for Chennai. This committee shall keep track of the air quality, crime, sanitation, health and water.
