On Wednesday in support of its various demands, including action against party functionaries for stopping its members from lifting water in and around villages in Chengalpet and Thiruporur, the private tankers are planning  a strike.

On Tuesday, just 1,500 of the 4,000 lorries that supply to various establishments in the city, including IT companies, hospitals, hotels and malls, operated.

The association has also opposed the ‘rule’ preventing operation of tankers in the city between 8am and noon and between 4pm and 8pm saying it would affect business.

M Nijalingam of the Chennai Private Water Lorry Tankers’ Association said, “We supply water to all the IT and ITES companies in the IT Corridor, Guindy and Ambattur Industrial Estate. We expect cooperation from all concerned to ensure free flow of water to all.” On Tuesday, officials in Chengalpet and Thiruporur held talks with the association members and orally assured them of support to ensure there is no shortage of water.

Every day, more than 500 tanker take water from farm wells on the outskirts and supply it to residential areas and software companies.
