Massive Security Deployment for Kaanum Pongal Celebrations in Chennai

In preparation for the upcoming Kaanum Pongal celebrations in Chennai, a robust security plan has been put in place, with 18,000 policemen set to be engaged in ensuring public safety and happiness. The festivities, expected to draw crowds in the lakhs, will witness enhanced surveillance through the use of drones, particularly at the Marina.

While Pongal is being celebrated today, the main Kaanum Pongal festivities are scheduled for the day after tomorrow. Families are anticipated to throng various entertainment centers, including Marina, Besant Nagar, Kindy Children`s Park, Vandalur Zoo, Island Fair, shopping malls with cinemas, and the bustling book fair.

Chennai Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sandeep Roy Rathore has orchestrated comprehensive security arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents during the celebrations. Under the supervision of Additional Commissioners of Police Prem Anand Sinha (South), Sudhakar (Traffic), and Azra Garg (North), a total of 18,000 policemen, including personnel from Law and Order, Crime Branch, Armed Forces, and Tamil Nadu Special Police Force, will be deployed.

With expectations of over 3 lakh people thronging the Marina, extensive safety measures have been implemented along the road and beach from Napier Bridge to the lighthouse. Over 10 Police Help Centers have been established, equipped with ambulances and medical teams for emergency medical assistance, as well as fire engines and firemen for rescue operations.

To enhance water safety, motorboats and trained volunteers are on standby to rescue individuals disobeying the ban on swimming in the Marina. Additionally, more than 15 temporary watchtowers have been erected from the statue of the laborer to the lighthouse, with police monitoring through binoculars. Barrier fences have been installed to prevent the public from venturing into the sea.

Drones equipped with cameras will be employed to monitor and prevent any signs of violence or anti-social activities. Plainclothes women police officers will patrol to deter and apprehend violators of women`s safety. In a proactive move, police-made ID cards are available at over 10 Police Help Centers and the Besant Nagar, Elliotts Beach Temporary Police Station for immediate rescue efforts in case children go missing in the crowd. Over 50 thousand policemen are set to be involved in Pongal security across Tamil Nadu.
