The recent heavy rains in Chennai did not spare the old and new areas in Chennai and many core areas got inundated. Most places in Villivakkam have escaped from the floods this time around inspite of water stagnation. It is now brought out that the restoration of Villivakkam Lake was carried out to utilise 320 MLD capacities by the officials belonging to GCC. Point is that this lake is the disposal point for SWD in this area. It has got 2 inlets from TVS canal and SIDCO Nagar. Information is that between 2016 and 2017 the capacity of SWD in the main roads was increased.

It was highlighted by an official belonging to Chennai corporation that the lake was an oxidation pond filled with silt and sewage. Now, it holds water up to 4.2m depth and has prevented floods in SIDCO Nagar etc. the need to pump out water forcibly is there now inspite of some improvement in the flooding situation when compared to the past.

It was mentioned by Arappor Iyakkam member Mr. Jayaram Venkatesan that the organisation would continue to fight for restoration of the entire lake. He explained how the situation has been improving year after year.
