The traffic congestion in Chennai city is so heavy and the traffic police personnel usually have a tough time managing it.

To regulate the traffic movement in Chennai, ITMS or Intelligent Traffic Management System was proposed 3 years ago by GCC.  Now, GCC has gone further in this and has invited international firms to implement this project under Smart City Mission.

The project would be implemented across CMA and it would be done by getting a loan from JICA or Japan International Cooperation Agency. This was mentioned in the Chennai Corporation document.

In the future, there would be installation of cameras at various traffic signals, road junctions and in many accident prone places in Chennai. Unwanted waiting duration at the traffic signals would not be there because of the fact that the traffic signals across Chennai would be automated.

It is learnt that the cameras at the various accident prone places would reduce the response time as the concerned authorities would be alerted. An amount more than Rs 650 crores would be used by GCC for this ITMS and Rs 400 crores would be provided by JICA. As many as 165 junctions have been identified now by GCC out of 491 traffic junctions. It is now revealed that under this project cameras would be placed along the major roads under ITMS that would capture and count the number of vehicles plying on the road. The traffic signals would be operated by specifically designed software.

The software would be used to set the duration of green and red signals and this would then be connected to ICCC or Integrated Command and Control Centre. The traffic junctions would be redesigned to reduce the accidents and it would also be carried out by GCC. Getting updates regarding the arrival of MTC buses would be possible for the passengers.
