Drink beetroot juice to improve stamina and blood pressure

A paper published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology-Heart Failure, has said that beetroot juice boosts endurance and improves blood pressure. The paper was written by researchers at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre.

The researchers say that drinking beetroot juice everyday improves exercise endurance and also blood pressure in elderly people who have been diagnosed with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFPEF). Exercise intolerance in the shortness of breath and excessive fatigue during normal amount son exertion, otherwise called stamina. This is a primary symptom of HFPEF. It is caused partly due to reduced oxygen levels being delivered to active skeletal muscles. 

The study showed that a daily dose of beetroot juice improves aerobic endurance by as high as 24 percent in just one week. The researchers measured aerobic endurance as cycling time to exhaustion at a fixed workload lower than their maximum. The study also found that the juice reduced systolic blood pressure by 5 to 10 mmHg. 

Says a researcher, Although, larger trials need to be conducted, these initial findings suggest that one week of daily beetroot juice could be a potential therapeutic option to improve aerobic endurance in patients with HFPEF, which has implications for improving everyday activities and quality of life.
