Here are a few WhatsApp tips and tricks you must have up your sleeve.

If you want to know more about the message that you have sent, tap and hold on the message. Choose the Info icon. You will get the time at which the message was read. If you are using iOS, drag the message to the left to get the details.

You can access chat history when you buy a new phone too. Its easiest if you use an iPhone or Android.  If you use a microSD card, go to Menu > Settings > Chat settings > Backup Conversations. When you use the card for your new phone, install WhatsApp and choose Restore when prompted. If you have internal storage backup, use a follow explorer to go to sdcard / WhatsApp / folder. You can, then, move contents manually.

What if you want to send a common bulk message but don`t want everyone to know that its a common message? Use the broadcast feature that will help you send the same message to multiple contacts. For Android phones, tap Menu > New Broadcast. For iOS, tap Broadcast Lists which is on the Chats screen. Now tap on New List.

All backup for WhatsApp happens every morning at 4 a.m. You can recover a deleted message by uninstalling the app and reinstalling it. While doing so, you will be asked if you want to restore from backup. Backup will cover the last 7 days. You can also restore older chats on Android. Use an app such as ES File Explorer. Go to sdcard / WhatsApp / Databases and access your backups. Rename desired file to msgstore.db.crypt. Now, go to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Clear Data. Now start it up and restore when prompted.

You can access WhatsApp on the Web from your computer or laptop if you have a Google Chrome browser. Now, follow instructions for your phone too. Make sure that your phone is connected to the internet, preferably through WiFi to ensure that the connection is good enough for everything to sync. Open WhatsApp, and look for WhatsApp Web option in the Menu. Scan the QR code in the browser. This does not work in the iPhone.

WhatsApp automatically saves images and videos that you receive onto your Camera Roll (on iOS) or your gallery or Photos App (on Android). To stop this in iOS, go to Settings > privacy > Photos and choose Off for WhatsApp.  On Android, use a file manager like ES File Explorer to go to sdcard / WhatsApp / Media. Tap New at the bottom left in any folder that you don`t want shared. Create a file called .nomedia.

If you tap and hold a chat, and then choose Add conversation shortcut from the Menu that pops up, it will appear on your home screen. This can be dragged around like an app icon or widget.

To stop group conversation notification on the iPhone, open the group, tap the subject to get Group Info, now tap Mute. OnOn Android, open the chat, tap the Menu button, Tap Mute. There are options to specify the time of Mute as well.

On Android, you can choose from a variety of security apps to enable password or PIN protection for your WhatsApp chats. Apps such as Messenger and Chat Block, App Lock and Smart AppLock are popular. Windows Phones have WhatsApp Locker; Blackberry has Lock for Whats Messenger. Unfortunately, there is no such option for the iPhone.
