12 Cities in Karnataka get their name changed

England rulers who once ruled our country got places in our country named that are convenient for them to pronounce. These names are now being modified so that they reflect the richness of our heritage.
 
After struggling for about 40 years, the name Bombay was replaced as Mumbai. It happened in the year 1995. It was then the turn for Chennai. The name Madras was renamed as Chennai. The name Trivandrum that prevailed in 1991 then got changed as Thiruvananthapuram.
 
Similarly, the name Calcutta was changed as Kolkata in 2001. The name Pondichery became Puducheri and several other places got their names changed too.
 
In this way, wanting to change names of about 12 cities consisted in the state, Karnataka has come forward with a plea for permission to the central government. The state submitted its request to the central government in 2006 following which it was provided with the permission.
 
Now, the state has given an official confirmation that 12 cities of the state will get their names changed as per which Bangalore will be called Bengaluru from now on. Mangalore will be called Mangaluru, Mysore will be called Mysuru, and similar other name changes are done in the state.
