Aiming to bridge the gap between industry and institute and provide employability to each and every student, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) is devising plans to create a new post of ‘Professors by practice’ which will recruit professors who are experts in the industry.

According to the director of IIT-M Professor Bhaskar Ramamurthi, there are professionals in mammoth numbers who hold rich expertise and passion towards teaching, but they do not carry a PhD degree. These experts possess knowledge in product design, market, design, technology, cost effectiveness, manufacturability, and so on. These experts are sure to play very useful role in academic institutions. They can teach elective papers which usual professors find difficult.

Furthermore, it is believed that the professors of practice concept can help in co-supervising PhD and research students, as they will have immense industry experience.

Defining new research projects will also be easier and better outputs. The selection process for these professors will be too vigorous. Professionals who hold 20 years experience in the field are eligible for the selection process.
