Here is what diabetics have been longing for, a rice that any diabetic patient can have.

City based research foundation has come up with an application for patent for its new finding – high-fibre rice. This is said to slow down the increase in sugar level in blood after a meal.

Comparing with the commonly used rice variety, this type of rice has five times more fibre content even in its polished form, says Dr. V. Mohan, a renowned diabetologist and Chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre.

This variety of rice is called Dr Mohan’s High Fibre Rice. Talking about the production of this rice variety, the doctor says it is produced by a conventional method of plant breeding called Mutation Breeding which was launched in 2013. Out of the 2250 varieties produced globally, 305 belong to our Indian nation.

Sudha Vasudevan, a senior scientist and Head of Madras Diabetes Research Foundation says they conducted a pilot study and compared the glycemic profile of this newly developed rice variety with the conventional ones. According to its results, normal rice variety can be replaced with this newly developed rice as it helps reduce the gylcemic response among people who are overweighed.
