Chennai Metrowater Suck Outs – Helps Preserving Water

Posted on: 21/Apr/2014 4:13:40 PM

As per the survey, it has been found that nearly one million cubic feet of water is vanished from the main four basins which satiates the thirst of the populace daily.

In the endeavor of curtailing the loss of water on evaporation, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply joint its hands with the Sewerage Board or Metrowater in rerouting water from Cholavaram reservoir (Chief water Storage unit) to Red Hills Lake.

Last year nearly about 15 cubic feet per second of water have been diverted from Cholavaram reservoir to Red Hills, every day during this summer season, so as not to lose little water drop to evaporate, said a Metrowater official.

Currently, the combined storage capacity of all the four water reservoirs namely Red Hills, Cholavaram, Chembarambakkam and Poondi have been accounts for just 2,919 million cubic feet (mcft).

About 350 mcft of Krishna water has aided in boosting up the storage unit in Poondi reservoir. In addition, we are receiving 77 mcft of water from Cuddalore Veeranam tank, said an official from the water resources department.

Inspite of many measuring steps built in drumming of groundwater from Poondi, Tamaraipakkam and Neyveli, the agency is fit to supply only 650 million litres of water daily (MLD) in the city versus the 831 MLD it usual supplies. Hence several suburbs are facing a water dearth.
