Fire-alarm systems must be installed in Air-conditioned Buses-Transport department urge

In order to improve the safety measures in the bus, the transport department has insisted that A/C omnibus manufacturer should install smoke-detectors and windows which open automatically in case of any emergency. 

There has been a manifold increase in the persons employed in metropolitan cities like Chennai. The transport needs have also increased accordingly. More passengers have shown preference to more comfortable buses.

With summer nearing its peak, there has been an increase in the number of passengers taking the omnibus.

Around 1000 omnibuses operate daily in the Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Thirunelveli, Hyderabad, and Bangalore routes. Out of these, 800 buses operate from Chennai.This includes 400 A/C omnibuses.

At the same time, there has been a rise in the number of accidents involving omnibuses. This has caused alarm among the travelling public.

The officials inform that they have urged the improvement of safety levels in the omnibus. A video regarding the safety measures must be shown to the passengers before the bus starts.Also, 2 drivers must be used in the long distance buses.

Further, smoke detectors are important and they should be installed in every bus. Similarly, windows which open automatically in emergency conditions should also be installed.

The omnibus companies have informed that they will comply with this requirement. Regular safety checks are also being carried out.

All India Omnibus owners’ Association President, Mr. J. M. Panidian acknowledged that there was an increase in the number of passengers travelling in A/C omnibus. Special safety training is given to the drivers. To improve the safety level, alert alarm systems and widows with automatic opening in emergency condition will be installed in the omnibuses.
