According to an article published in the New York Times, the often said piece of advise: `You should drink eight glasses of water a day` is just a myth. This advise has been around for many generations and is believed to keep the body hydrated.

The article is written by Aaron E. Carroll, who is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Indiana University of Medicine. He says that there is no scientific reason to drinking 8 glasses of water a day. According to the article, the myth was first published in a 1945 Food and Nutrition Board recommendation. This recommendation said that people need about 2.5 liters of water a day (roughly 8 glasses). However, the recommendation also says, `Most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods.`

Prof. Carroll says that water is present in our daily food - fruits, vegetables, juice, tea, coffee, even beer. So water is not the only source of hydration. He also says that there is no real scientific proof that drinking extra water has health benefits. The amount of water a person needs to drink differs by what each one eats, where they live, how big they are and what they are doing.
