Once the construction gets over, the metro station at Thirumayilai would be the deepest in Chennai. It must be noted that at 35m Thirumayilai metro station would be constructed on 4 levels and 4 tunnels would be stacked one above another. It will be opened for public use in 2026.
Last week, an annual urban mobility India conference and expo took place in Kochi in Kerala. In this, CMRL made many heads turn when it displayed the model of Thirumayilai metro station. It is believed that this metro station would help many commuters to seamlessly switch between the corridors to reach Chennai Egmore or Chennai Central station, the present airport and also to the upcoming Parandur airport. The Thirumayilai metro station would link MRTS, MTC bus stop and Kapaleeswarar temple.
Under the Luz junction, the metro station would be coming up at an area of 4854.4 sq km. Information collected is that Thirumayilai metro station would also be an interchange linking corridor3 from Madhavaram to Siruseri Sipcot and corridor 4 from Light House to Poonamalle bypass. To provide the commuters with easy access, there would be as many as 5 entry points across the junction. According to a release from CMRL, the Thirumayilai metro station would be a major multimodal hub linking Thirumayilai MRTS with MTC bus stop and Kapaleeswarar temple.
It is noteworthy that in phase-1 Chennai Central metro station was the deepest at 30metres. There are a lot of challenges involved in constructing the metro station at Thirumayilai and when constructed it would be an engineering challenge.
