Thiruvotriyur metro station likely to open by August

It is now known that the North Chennai residents will have to wait for at least another 4 months to use the metro train services to reach ‘Theradi’ in Thiruvotriyur as the elevated station linking the area is likely to be ready by August!
Earlier, the station was expected to be ready by June! However, CMRL officials (Chennai Metro Rail Limited) informed that the work progress got slowed down due to Covid situation and the resultant lockdown imposition. Thiruvotriyur Theradi Metro Station is one of the 8 stations in the 9 km stretch from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar. The line was opened on 14th February with 7 stations!
An official from CMRL informed that ‘Work is going on at the station. We hope to get it ready by August along with the depot at Wimco Nagar.”
Officials said that the delay in acquiring the land for the station and change in the alignment of the elevated corridor in the location affected the construction and the failure to meet the the deadline set earlier.
The elevated via-duct leading to the station is at its highest level along with the 9 km line at the 17 m from the road level. The elevation was made to allow the movement of the temple chariot during the annual festival of a Pallavan Period Temple in the area, which attracts devotees from across the entire Chennai Metro City! At present, the metro trains skip past this station which is located between Kaladipet and Thiruvotriyur Stations.
This delay may, however, have an impact on the ridership as the station is located close to the popular Pallavan Period temple which attracts people from across the city. This station also links both residential and shopping bazaars in Thiruvotriyur. CMRL officials said that there will be a significant boost in patronage once the station opens and by 2026, they project that the station may cater to around 22000 commuters daily!
The station, previously called Gowri Ashram, is built in cantilever style with the via-duct sitting on a single column of of pillars built on the centre of the road with the staircase and the 24 m link bridge built on either side of the road giving access to the station. The station will take commuters to platform level from the the road through a staircase as the station does not have ticketing level.
