Prospects for very heavy rains in Chennai Metro City in the next 24 hours!

Indian Meteorological Centre (IMD) has warned that due to the intensification of the depression zone formed recently over the Southeast Bay of Bengal transforming into a cyclone, there are prospects for heavy to very heavy rains in a few places in the Chennai district and its surrounding districts.

In a notification released in this regard, as on today’s morning session, it is informed that there are prospects for heavy to very heavy rains in a few places in the next 24 hours in the Chennai District and its neighbouring districts of Thiruvallur, Chingleput, and Kanchipuram.

The low-pressure zone formed earlier over the southwest Bay of Bengal has initially transformed into a strong depression zone.  This further transformed into a cyclone on Tuesday morning (today, 24th November) and is set to cross the coasts during the afternoon on 25th November between Karaikkal and Mamallapuram near Puducherry. IM|D has informed that during the crossing the coast of the cyclone, very high-speed winds at 100 kmph to 110 kmph, intermittently at even 120 kmph.

In a warning notification released by IMD today morning (Tuesday, 24th November), it is mentioned that the depression zone formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal has transformed into a cyclone and is presently located at a distance of 440 km southwest of Puducherry and at a distance of 470 km southwest of the Chennai Metro City. This is set to transform into a severe cyclone in the next 12 hours. Then, it would drift towards the northwest direction and as per the present climatic condition is likely to cross the coasts on the afternoon on 25th November between Karaikkal and Mamallapuram.

Due to this, there are prospects for rains in the next 3 days from 24th November (today, Tuesday) to 26th November (Thursday) in the State of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. There are prospects for very heavy rains in the delta districts and the northern coastal districts on 24th & 25th November and prospects for heavy to very heavy rains in 1 or 2 places in the other northern districts. As regards the Chennai Metro City and its suburbs, there are prospects for heavy to very heavy rains on Tuesday (24th) and Wednesday (25th).

High-speed winds at 55 kmph to 65 kmph are likely to blow in the Northern coastal districts on Tuesday and Wednesday (24th & 25th of November). When the cyclone crosses the coast, very high-speed winds at 100 kmph to 110 kmph and intermittently, even at 120 kmph may blow.

As for today, Tuesday, 24th November, there are prospects for very heavy rains with thunder in a few places in the districts of Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagappattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Ariyalur and Karaikkal. There are prospects for heavy to very heavy rains with thunder in a few places in the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chingleput, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Trichy, and Pudhukkottai and Puducherry.
