As the impact of the summer heat is at its maximum intensity from 12.00 noon to 4.00 PM, the best protection is not to venture out during this period!

As there was a change in the climate conditions, the seasonal monsoon rains dis not happen as expected! Hence, there has been scorching heat even before the onset of summer this year!

On the one side, there is the issue of the impact of the scorching heat! On the other, the season leads to physical complaints as well skin diseases with the scorching heat!

Venturing out in the sun during summer leads to excessive sweating! An unpleasant odour emanates from this sweat. This further leads to skin complaints such as prickly heat, popsicles, itching, dirt, and Pityriasis versicolor (in English) - mosaic (themal in Tamil), etc. The scorching summer may even lead to small pox.

Further skin tends to darken when directly exposed to the sun rays! In order to reduce this impact, one has to drink a lot of water and juices. A sumptuous quantity of vegetables MUST be included in the regular diet. It is advisable to avoid non-vegetarian items! Fish can be taken.

It is better to wear light cotton clothes to the extent possible. This would help prevent excess sweating. The children get more affected during the summer as compared to the adults! Hence, while taking out children under the age of 5, cover them with cloth which will protect them from direct sun rays. Avoid dressing infants with all sorts of dresses!

All of us have noted that the skin of those who venture out a lot under the sun gets darkened considerably! The main reason for this is when hot sun rays attack the directly, the ‘B’ type ultraviolet radiation destroys the DNAs on the skin. In order to counter this loss, the ‘lemanin’ pigments are produced in large quantity on the skin which give a dark tint to the skin! At best, this can be explained as the ‘self-protection’ action of the skin from the harmful effects of the direct sun rays!

In order to prevent darkening of the skin as above, one should refrain from moving under the sun for not more than 2 hours! As the impact of heat is more severe in the summer season, it is best advised not to venture out under the sun especially from 12.00 Noon to 4.00 PM!
