Established in the year 1984 in Chennai, Schizophrenia Research Foundation or SCARF is a non- governmental organization that is involved in providing care and rehabilitation for those having severe mental health issues. This research foundation in Chennai is grabbing the attention now.

It is worthy to note that on 10th October ‘World Mental Health’ day would be observed and it is now said that on this day SCARF would launch a resource centre for youth. By this, the young adults would not only be able to discuss the issues they face but also about the issues they want to talk about.

Dr. Shiva Prakash, child and adolescent psychiatrist at SCARF opened out about how one in three individuals in India are below the age of 25 and how mental issues would affect around 20% of the population. He then spoke about how there was a time lag between the realisation of the mental issue and seeking help for it and how this was the reason for making mental issues worse. He highlighted about teens of today have a tug of war between being independent and dependent within their families.

It was later pointed out by Dr Shiva Prakash that the centre at Greams Road in Chennai would be run by research associates from SCARF. This would make the youths feel easy to open out. A psychiatrist would oversee the activities at this centre. It is worth mentioning that between aged 15 adn18 the schizophrenia and bipolar disorder would be at peak in the persons. Point is now more cases of severe mental illness in adolescent and in young adulthood is seen.

The shocking information is the age of first substance abuse has decreased now. Earlier, it was 12 years when a kid first started to smoke or drink alcohol but now it has come down to 10 years.

Anxiety disorders, as well as depression, are more prevalent now in the adolescents and SCARF has been coming across many of these cases. The important point to be noted is parents do not realise that their child has got a disorder and they bring their child for behavioural pattern.
