The Central Food Minister Ramvilas Paswan has informed that the central government has sufficient stock of onions.

Considering the production of onion in the country, the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and the Eastern States play a prominent part.

However, the growth/yield has been severely affected by the recent heavy rains. So, the onions kept as stock in godowns is presently being supplied.

Due to heavy rains in especially Maharashtra, onion growth has been severely affected.  The country’s largest onion market is in Maharashtra State’s Nasik Lasalkhan Market. The price of onion per kg had touched Rs. 45 here a week earlier itself. Comparatively, the price of onion per kg was Rs. 33 on 21st September!

Meanwhile, onion was being sold at up to Rs. 70 per kg in Tamil Nadu. The public was put to great hardship due to this!

The state government of Tamil Nadu took some corrective action to check onion price. In this scenario, a review meeting was conducted regarding control of onion prices at Chennai presided by the Minister for Cooperative Department, Sellur Raju.

After the meeting, the minister shared:

‘The Chief Minister had ordered to keep the onion price under check. The action had to be taken by7 the department of cooperatives. Subsequently, a meeting was held for 2 days with the concerned officials.

Action has been initiated to procure onion at lower prices from other states and to sell them through the Green Farm Cooperative Stores. Whenever the price of any item goes up, the same will be procured at market price and sold to the public at a reduced price in order to keep the price rise under control.

Accordingly, onion has been procured from Andhra and action has been initiated to sell the same at a lower price. The higher price may last for 2 days and the public may not procure them! Just in order to check this, the onion will be procured from Andhra and sold here.

Accordingly, action has been initiated to sell onion at 200 ration shops from today (Thursday, 26th September).’

He informed that onion will be sold at Rs. 33 per kg in the cooperative stores in Tamil Nadu.

In this situation, the central Food Minister Ramvilas Paswan has informed on his Twitter page that the states can procure onion from the central government as required at a price of Rs. 15.59 per kg.

He informed that Tripura State has been n given 1859 tons of onion. Haryana has been given 2000 tons, and Andhra, 960 tons of onion.
