Solar power plants now in 2 more metro stations in Chennai

Posted on: 06/Apr/2019 11:05:26 AM
Utilizing solar power plants for generating solar energy is a fantastic idea. The news is Nanganallur as well as Menambakkam metro stations in Chennai have been installed with 2 solar power plants each having capacity of 428 KWp. The important point is these 2 solar plants are commissioned at the roofs of these two elevated metro stations. It is now revealed that part of the daily operations on these two above mentioned metro stations would run on solar power.

Around 57,780 units would be generated in a month by these 2 solar plants and the solar plants are expected to save the CMRL around Rs 26.34 lakhs per year. In the future, major portion of the operations at the metro stations is planned to be powered by solar plants. To add to this, CMRL are also having plans to utilize solar power to run trains also. It is brought out that the generated solar power would be used for lighting systems and to operate electrical equipment that is needed for the maintenance of the metro stations.

The important information is CMRL has a total installed capacity of 4.1 MWp solar power and it includes those installed at the head office in Koyambedu and a few metro stations in Chennai.

At its depot, CMRL has already installed 1MW solar panels and 125 KW at its car park area. By this 1.35 lakh units per month is being generated and thereby saving CMRL an amount of Rs 21.6 lakh on the power charges. By the end of this year 2019, we might be able to see another 2.5 MWp roof top solar power installation that is now under progress.

The main objective of reducing carbon footprint could be achieved by CMRL by means of installation of more such solar plants and by usage of more solar energy. There are underground metro stations in Chennai such as Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar East, Anna Nagar Tower and Shenoy Nagar. Important piece of news is in these 4 metro stations, solar photovoltaic panels of capacity 103 KWp have been commissioned. It is important to mention here that these panels could generate13,800 units every day and this would save CMRL an amount of Rs 6.3 lakh per year.
