Now soil tests have started in T. Nagar for phase-2 metro rail construction

Posted on: 04/Apr/2019 10:14:37 AM
There has been constant fear among the T. Nagar residents regarding losing their homes and other public spaces because of the phase-2 metro rail construction. The news that has come out at this point of time is soil tests have begun in T. Nagar now. This place is core city area in Chennai is known.

The point to be noted is metro rail network in the locality has been planned as a part of 26.1 km corridor 4 that stretches from Light House to Poonamallee in the 118.9 km phase-2. Closer to the Nandanam metro station, the workers were drilling bore holes at Venkatanarayana Road to collect samples for the soil tests.

An official belonging to CMRL shared his thoughts. He said soil tests were started in certain areas on the corridor and it would e completed before the end of the year 2019. It must be taken into account that atleast 2 underground stations named Natesan Park and Panagal Park have been planned to link Chennai city’s biggest shopping hub with the rest of phase-2 network.

There are many core areas such as Mylapore, T, Nagar, Kodambakkam and Vadapalani etc in Chennai. It is now said that the corridor from Light House to Poonamallee would cut across the above mentioned areas. It is well known that areas like Valasarawakkam, Porur, Iyyappanthangal, Karayanchavadi and Poonamallee localities are fast developing with heavy traffic congestion and the corridor would also link these above mentioned areas that are not well connected through public transportation. Important information is the corridor was initially planned from Light house to CMBT and later extended to Poonamallee.  The main purpose was to link localities that were planned to be served by monorail.

There have been protests by the residents against CMRL who would be taking over their homes to construct network under corridor 4. The thought of losing the greenery as well as the parks in their area has made the residents more worried now. At both Natesan Park as well as in Panagal Park, metro station construction was planned earlier but changed later as Natesan Park would be very near to Nandanam Metro Station.

The sad piece of information is the Panagal Park would be closed as metro station would come up there. This was as per an official. It must not be forgotten that in 2011, Thiru-Vi Ka Park in Shenoy Nagar was closed and many trees were axed or transplanted elsewhere for the underground metro station.
