Metro trains in Chennai to pass under Adyar river, Chetpet lake etc

Posted on: 03/Apr/2019 9:30:33 AM
It is expected that the metro rail in Chennai would begin the operations on the phase-2 corridors in another 6 years of time and this would benefit many residents of Chennai. The sensational piece of information that has come out now is the metro trains would pass through the dark depths of Chennai city and run rapidly under Adyar River and Chetpet Lake at a depth of 20 m. By this it would link Madhavaram in the north and Sholinganallur in the south. Sounds incredible right!!

Under these water bodies in the above mentioned places in Chennai, twin tunnels would be built for nearly a kilometer to link 4 stations at Adyar and Chetpet. Soil tests are very important in constructions is well known. The point is soil tests are being carried out now in Adyar River near the popular Theosophical Society. By the end of 2019 or by next January 2020, the constructions for the tunnels would be carried out.

It is important to mention here that 2 tunnels would be built under the Adyar River to link Adyar junction station that is expected to come up near Thiru-Vi Ka Bridge. Another point is Adyar depot station is also planned on the LB. Road. To link KMC station on Barnaby Road with the Chetpet station, another pair of tunnels would be constructed under the Chetpet Lake.

It must be noted that the 4 stations are part of 45.8 km corridor of 118.9 km phase-2 from Madhavaram to SIPCOT. It is now brought out that CMRL has received funding for the portion of the corridor covering 36 km to be part of 52 km priority corridor. In the month of June, tenders for the construction of the priority corridor would be floated. It must not be forgotten that the 52 km priority corridor would be ready by 2024-2025 and this was confirmed by the managing director of CMRL, Mr. Pankaj Kumar.

An official belonging to CMRL spoke about how the soil tests were completed at Chetpet Lake and how work to collect the soil samples in the Adyar River is going on. He spoke about how just 3 % of work is only pending now and that would be completed in another 3 days of time.

It is known that in the phase-1, CMRL constructed twin tunnels under Cooum between Central Metro and Government Estate and under Buckingham canal near Central Metro. Reinforced tunnel rings were used to hold the soil above.
