In Chennai phase-2 metro, PSD to be present on platforms in all stations

We often keep hearing news about the people crossing the railway tracks or attempting suicides etc in the railway stations but we are unable to find a solution to prevent this from happening. The latest superb piece of news is Chennai Metro Rail Ltd or CMRL has got plans to install PSD or Platform Screen Doors in all the elevated metro stations in phase-2 in Chennai. By this the commuters would be prevented to access the train tracks and it would act as a protective barrier.

It is now revealed that the reason for the installation of PSD is to increase the security at the metro stations and prevent people from crossing the tracks or attempt suicides at the elevated metro stations in Chennai. It is well known that phase-2 project of Chennai Metro would cost a staggering amount of Rs 69,180 crores and there would be as many as 128 metro stations in the 118.9 km network.

Out of 128 metro stations, 80 stations would be elevated and the remaining 48 would be underground. The point is all the stations would have this PSD facility soon to prevent unnecessary deaths from taking place.

It must be noted that Chennai city was the first city in India to have PSD in the in all the 19 underground metro stations even in the phase-1 itself. It was pointed out by some officials belonging to CMRL that the plans to install these PSD in the underground metro stations were due to two main reasons.

One reason is the underground metro stations are air-conditioned and these doors would make sure that the cool air would not escape into the tunnel. It might result in the electricity consumption of the underground metro stations to increase if cool air escapes into the tunnel. The second reason was these doors would make sure that no commuter would jump into the metro rail tracks.

It must not be forgotten that at the Vadapalani metro station there was a suicide attempt some three years back. In addition to this there were also few incidences where he commuters have crossed the tracks in some metro stations. All these happened in the last 4 years.

The official of CMRL expressed his views and spoke about how when phase-2 plan was made their team were very much concerned about the commuters safety and have made plans to put PSD at the elevated metro stations also.
