CMRL to incorporate artificial aquifers

Posted on: 12/Mar/2019 1:59:47 PM
As a move to maintain all the 42 train fleets, CMRL has come up with the idea of storing excessive water at artificial aquifer intending to use it at times of shortage. The CMRL is set to create recharge well. For this, the CMRL officials are hunting for experts so that a basic hydrological study can be performed within Koyambedu office where CMRL maintenance depot is located. Also, for reducing the metro water supply by half, a sewage treatment plant is also idealized.

In the gulf countries, the concept of artificial aquifers is quite common. They act as water storage units. There won’t be any need for building pumps or tanks. The excessive amount of groundwater shall get stored in places wherever available rather than letting it get evaporated as it is. This will be of help during shortage periods, says a CMRL official. This will also get used for storing the usual metro water supply.

What is artificial recharging? This is a method in which the surplus amount of water will be diverted into the ground through recharge wells, or make minor changes in the natural conditions thereby improving infiltration.

It is to be noted that about 1.5 lakh litres of water get used every single day for the purpose of washing the trains, and for the air-conditioning system at the Metro administration building.

Officials add that a lot of water is sourced for the needs of metro water through pipelines and tankers and ponds that lie nearby. For gardening and cooling towers used for AC systems in metro, there are special sewage treatment plants present right within the campus. This holds overall capacity of 75,000 litre per day.

Officials add that the soil condition will be studied, and the groundwater table levels and storage systems will be deeply analyzed. As there are ponds lying close by, soil and water levels should logically be good enough. Upon completing the study, the feasibility of recharge well can be clearly understood, say officials.

The overall capacity of the sewage treatment plan will probably get doubled to 1.5 lakh litres in another 2 months, as close to 75,000 litres of sewage is likely to get released at the outlets in CMRL housing quarters. Here, there are over 100 families.
