IGBC offers platinum rating to 14 underground metro stations

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has rewarded all the 14 underground metro stations as inclusive of final leg of phase-1 along 45 km stretch with Platinum Rating. This is a certification offered for incorporating green and user-friendly systems for public facility. Thus under phase-1, all the 32 stations have received platinum rating from IGBC.    
On Monday (yesterday), the Managing Director of CMRL, Mr. Pankaj Kumar Bansal offered all the 14 underground metro stations with the platinum rating. And the same was handed over by CN Raghavedran, the Chairman of Chennai Chapter of IGBC. These 14 stations includes Washermenpet, High Court, Central Metro Government Estate, Thousand Lights,  Mannadi, AG-DMS, etc. all of which got open for public usage on 10th February. It is to be remember that 13 other stations had received the certification (13 elevated plus 5 underground) recently.

In order to make these stations friendly to the commuters, a number of features and measures are incorporated so as to make it energy efficient and add its aesthetic value as well.

  • Solar energy harnessing
  • Ease of access for commuters who are differently abled
  • Additional facilities for the visually impaired and hearing impaired commuters
  • Excellent staff assistance

Above mentioned are some of the notable features in these metro stations.s a move to bring down the carbon footprint, about 32.5 percent of overall regenerative energy produced through the train operation is used back at the grid. This also cuts down on the electricity production cost.
