Metro track smoothening to be done for reducing excessive noise

There is quite some noise produced when the metro trains ply underground across the city. To reduce this, the Chennai Metro has come up with plans to do ‘Rail Grinding’ which is a process to smoothen tracks.

Most of the metro stations under the phase-1 of metro falls underground. This is for about 45 km stretch on the whole. As per the Chennai Metro Rail officials, there is significant amount of noise observed at these stations, particularly in the underground stretches. There is a lot of noise at times so that it gets really tough to even listen to the announcement being said inside the train. This is often the case during peak hours. People with hearing trouble and senior citizens find it too tough to listen to these announcements. Hence we have chosen to go with grinding the tracks.

Machine imported

For grinding the tracks along underground stretches of the metro, exclusive grinding machines are imported. In this, the presence of all kinds of irregularities and corrugations will be addressed and tracks will be smoothened in the process. It may take a few months to do the same. This measure is sure to reduce noise produced as the train runs underground.

Sometime ago, when a check was carried out at the metro, the noise produced was within permissible levels. This noise should not go beyond 70 decibels. While inspecting, it was found that the noise is under this range, say officials. While doing the check, officials noted higher atmospheric noise levels compared to that of train’s sound, as the underground network is silent. The issue will be soon sorted, say officials.
