Chennai Metro to link with different transport modes in phase-2

Posted on: 27/Feb/2019 9:57:01 AM
Metro trains in Chennai have been making lots of news in the recent times. The latest news is in a decade metro rail phase-2 of 118.9 km would be opened. This would connect both the suburbs in the Chennai city plus interlink different modes of transport. Commuting from places like Madhavaram and Siruseri to the core of Chennai city would be superb and without any issues because at the heart of the network would be present interchange stations. The point is detailed design is being prepared for the 52 km priority corridor and another 10 km line.

Form the 16 metro stations, the commuters could choose to shift between two metro corridors, move to suburban or MRTS line or the commuters could also take a MTC bus from the depot. This was confirmed by CMRL  It is worthy to mention that these includes interchanges at places like Perambur, Chetpet, Adyar, Nandanam, Kodambakkam, Alandur, Anna Nagar and Villivakkam.

In this year 2019, the construction of 52 km priority corridor that would link Madhavaram to Sholinganallur would be carried out and the 10 km would be a part of corridor 4 linking Lighthouse to Vadapalani.

An official explained about how interchange metro stations would be linked by means of pedestrian subways, pathways, foot-over-bridges or skywalks etc. By this the passengers would be able to move freely. There are interchanges now present at stations like Central, Alandur, Egmore, St Thomas Mount, CMBT, Mannadi and airport is known.

The important information is in the phase-2 between Madhavaram and Sholinganallur there would be 7 stations and in these stations the passengers could change the metro corridors or opt for other modes of transport also. It was pointed out that a commuter travelling from Madhavaram to airport would disembark at Chetpet and could take a suburban train on the Beach- Tambaram route to reach the airport. At Kilpauk, the commuters would be able to shift between two metro corridors.

The important point is a commuter travelling from northern suburbs along Madhavaram or from southern fringes along OMR would be able to shift between the 2 corridors at Kilpauk to reach Egmore or Central.
