Cement plays an important role in the construction sector is well known. The news is the cement manufacturers in Tamil Nadu have increased the rates of cement by 37 percent and this has affected the construction industry a lot now. It was brought out by Mr. R. Radhakrishnan, BAI trustee and past national president, that the abnormal rise in the price of cement has affected the housing sector and infrastructural development in TN.

The increase in the prices of cement is considered unethical and this was as per Mr. Radhakrishnan. He spoke about how the prices of basic raw materials in the production of cement have not increased but the price of the cement bag has increased by Rs 100. He wanted the government to form a separate regulatory authority soon. The fact is the price of the Portland cement has increased from the previous amount of Rs 250 last week to the current amount of Rs 340 to Rs 360 in this week.

Mr. Radhakrishnan then explained about how the state government had threatened to nationalize the cement factories many years back to reduce the price of cement. To offer cement at considerable rates, Amma cement was launched. He finally threw light on how a common man has to spend an additional Rs 1 lakh now to build 500 sqft house due to hike in the cement rates.

As per Mr. S. Ayyanathan, state chairman, it is clear that the builders would be forced to protest against the Tamil Nadu cement manufacturer’s irrational decision to increase the rates. He pointed out that construction is one of the most important economic activities and it contributes to the maximum GDP growth of India. The point is housing and real estate industry consumes 65% of cement production and this is followed by the infrastructure industry that consumes 18% of cement production.
