The maximum fare for Chennai Metro phase-1 to come down

People of Chennai use metro trains as one of their modes of transport to reach their destination these days. The latest news is the maximum fare for the Chennai Metro’s phase-1 project would come down from Rs 70 to Rs 60. It is now said that if a commuter travels with smart card that offers a discount of 10%, then the maximum fare for the travel from Washermanpet to Chennai airport would be Rs 54.

The above mentioned travel between Washermanpet and Chennai airport would be the longest distance of 21 km covered in the phase-1 project. According to some sources it is clear that the opening of new stretch between AG-DMS to Washermanpet is highly beneficial for the commuters and it was due to this that the maximum fare would come down.

In Chennai city the fares for metro trains ranges from Rs 10 to Rs 70 is known to us. The passengers pay a maximum ticket rate of Rs 70 when they travel from Chennai Central to Chennai airport through Koyambedu and this distance is 24 km. The important news collected is passenger could now travel from Chennai Central to Chennai airport through the Government Estate, LIC and Thousand Lights etc and for this distance of 18 km the commuter could pay just Rs 50. It must be taken into account that with the help of smart cards the commuters could pay just Rs 44 for the travel in the above mentioned route.

As per a source, a passenger could still travel from Washermanpet to Chennai airport or Chennai Central to Chennai airport through Koyambedu and pay Rs 54 or Rs 44 respectively for the tickets.

The point is AFC or Automated Fare Collection where the passengers swipe their smart cards would take only the cost of the shorter route. It is revealed that this would make more passengers to travel by metro trains. On a daily basis about 55,000 people travel using metro trains currently. Opening of 10 km stretch from AG-DMS to Washermanpet plus slight reduction in the ticket prices could increase the patronage. This was later confirmed by a source belonging to CMRL.
