The possibility of Local vehicles to be allowed free in toll-gates

The central government is exploring the possibilities of exempting toll-gate charges for local vehicles.

National Highways, of a total distance of 1 Lakh km have been laid. In more than 400 locations, toll-gates have been set up on these highways to collect the toll charges. There are 46 toll-gates in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Through these toll-gate charges, the National Highways Commission has been earning revenues worth several thousand crores. By making use of this revenue, several projects, including the widening of highways, maintenance of highways, etc., are taken up.

During the last 2014 election campaign, BJP had promised to remove these toll-gates. However, this was put on the block after BJP formed the government.

In this scenario, with the approaching parliamentary elections in view and the need to make the above promise good, it has been planned by the central government that during the 1st phase of this implementation, local vehicles are to be exempted from paying the toll-gate charges.

Some of the toll-gates are being operated by some private agencies on the basis of widening and expansion of highways and collection of toll-gate charges. These private agencies are hesitating to offer an exemption of toll-gate charges to the local vehicles.

So, in order to implement this plan, a report has been requested from the officials of the Highways Department. There are possibilities of this proposal being implemented after the submission of this report.
