Soon works on phase-2 of Chennai metro to start

It is known that ministry of urban development or MoUD made news when it communicated to the state government regarding phase-2 project of Chennai metro to have trains compulsorily made in India. It is important to mention that the JICA loan came with a condition that 30 percent of components including signalling system and trains must come from Japan only. This stopped the phase-2 project work from proceeding and the project had hit a roadblock.
The latest piece of news is according to a source it is now revealed that the above condition could be done away with and there has been discussions made with JICA. The good news is everything has been finalised now and getting their sanction is just a formality. So the decks have been cleared for the phase-2 of metro rail project in Chennai to move forward. On Monday, 10th of December 2018, MoUD had said that `Made in India’ trains would not be mandatory.
It is important to mention that the phase-2 project is estimated to be built with about Rs 80,000 crores and it would be 108 km having as many as 116 stations. Fifty kilometres of total 108 km would be constructed first and it would cost an amount of Rs 44,000 crores. The significant portion of loan amount would be extended by JICA with extreme low interest and with long payback period. It is now said that the 50km route that would be built first would have Madhavaram to CMBT and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur with as many as 58 stations. One important point is both these stations would be partially elevated and underground. In the Madhavaram to CMBT stretch, Madhavaram to Kolathur of 5.7km would be elevated and rest 9.7km would be underground. Likewise in the Madhavaram to Sholinganallur stretch, Madhavaram to Tidel Park of 26 km would be underground and the rest of 8.9km would be elevated.
For constructing the whole project, CMRL is having plans to acquire 800 properties across Chennai city and the land acquisition process has already started. It is known that notices have been issued to the land owners and they include people living close to Madhavaram, Perambur, Otteri, Sembium plus in other places like Chetpet, Nungambakkam etc.
Soil tests are very important and these tests are being done in places such as Nungambakkam, Ayanavaram, Thirumangalam, OMR and Cathedral Road etc. Mr. M.C. Sampath, the minister for industries, made his presence felt when he reviewed the progress of work from AG-DMS to Washermanpet.
