Two underground metro stretches set to open by January

The latest update from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has confirmed that the German based company has agreed to provide signaling software within the first week of January. This resulted in the official announcement of opening two metro stretches for public use in Phase I. Washermenpet to Chennai Central and Chennai Central to AG are the two underground stretches of Chennai Metro rail Phase 1 project. The two stretches will complete the total of 45 km with full time operations on the specified routes of Phase 1.
The earlier plan of CMRL is to open these two stretches in the last week of December. But the signaling software was not ready leading to further postponement of the opening. Now after the German based company’s approval the operations are on full swing to open these two stretches in the month of January.
After the signaling software is developed the final inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) will be done under the direct supervision of CMRL. Once the safety is officially approved by CMRS the two stretches will be opened for operations said one of the officials of CMRL. The stretch between Chennai Central and AG-DMS is 4.1 Km long including the stations such as Thousand Lights and Government Estate. The stretch between Washermenpet to Chennai Central runs for 3.4 Km comprising of stations like Mannady and High Court.
Many speculations are raised in terms of construction difficulty in the stretch of Anna Salai within the specified time limit. The stations with metro train operations can be achieved within the month of January but all other facilities inside the stations will have further delay for full operational condition.
CMRL plans to extend the train services up to 11 pm on November 2 and 3 for the benefit of commuters purchasing things for the festival of Diwali. It has also planned to operate more trains in these days directly based on the crowd.
