The upper limit for central government scholarship increased to Rs. 8 Lakhs

The upper limit for the annual income limit for obtaining higher education scholarship for the students has been increased from Rs. 6 Lakhs to Rs, 8 Lakhs. With this, a larger number of students who had scored high marks will become eligible to apply for this scholarship for higher education.

The central government has been providing the scholarship assistance for the students through various avenues in order to encourage the students to pursue higher education. As per this, the scheme - Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students - has been implemented.

Under this scheme, 82000 students at the national level are selected to get the above scholarship. Out of this, 41000 will be boy students and the balance 41000 will be girl students.

A specific number of scholarships are allotted for the different syllabus such as CBSE, ICSE, the state government syllabus, etc.

Accordingly, 5413 students are selected for the CBSE syllabus and 577 students are selected from the ICSE syllabus. 76100 students are selected from the state government syllabus. As for the state government syllabus, a specific number of students are offered the scholarship for each state. Accordingly, 4883 students from Tamil Nadu are selected for the scholarship to pursue higher education in the colleges and universities.

Out of the total allotted selection, 15% is for the category of SC, 7.5% for ST and 27% is allotted for the OBC category.

The students must have completed +2 and should be studying higher courses in the 1st year of Arts, Science, Engineering, or Medical courses. The students for the scholarship will be selected based on the marks scored in the +2 examinations. An annual scholarship of Rs. 10000 will be provided for the selected students. This amount will be directly credited to their bank savings accounts.

In case the students continue pursuing post-graduate courses after completing graduate courses, an annual scholarship of Rs. 20000 will be provided.

In case the students are pursuing an integrated postgraduate course, the students will be provided with an annual scholarship of Rs. 10000 for the 1st 3 years and Rs. 20000 for the 4th and 5th years.

Until now, the upper limit for the annual income to be eligible for this scholarship was fixed at Rs. 6 lakhs. In this situation, from the current academic year onwards, this upper limit has been increased from Rs. 6 lakhs per annum to Rs. 8 Lakhs per annum as per the recent order released by the central ministry of Human Welfare and Development.

The above central Ministry’s secretary has sent a detailed letter to all the state governments including Tamil Nadu.

With this revision, a higher number of students scoring high marks in their +2 examinations will become eligible to avail the above scholarship.
