The Chennai Metro City is celebrating its 379th birthday. Maybe this is the ideal occasion for how this historical city developed.

A small sand mound area on the Bay of Bengal beach area was the origin or the starting point for the development of Chennai! The owners of this mound, sons of Damal Chennappa Nayakar, Iyappa Nayakar and Venkatappa Nayakar old it to the British trader Francis Day on 22md August 1639.

He set up a warehouse/depot in this area and started trading services. This is the very place where the present Chief Secretariat of Tamil Nadu is located (St. George Fort).

Thus, the day on which Francis bought this mound is still being celebrated as Chennai’s birthday.

In the present location as Chennai or erstwhile Madras, the Britishers settled down and set up a place called George Town and allowed the local public to occupy the residential areas. Gradually, the other areas Thiruvallikkeni, Egmore, Mylapore, and other areas came under the control of the Britishers.

Gradually the industrial growth and trade picked up and the city started developing, Tens of thousands of workers who came from the neighbouring areas started entering the city. So, this stage can be construed as the starting point of the colossal growth of Chennai. Presently, Chennai is the 4th largest city in India and is considered one of the major cities in the world,

Automobile industries, software services, medical treatment, financial services and other sectors of industries grew phenomenally to make Chennai an important city. In the automobile industry, Chennai is known as the ‘Detroit’ of South Asia. Chennai Metro City has emerged as a capital of the medical tourism industry

Chennai presently is in the 2nd place as a major exporter of software. It is also the centre for the electronic products manufacture and trade. It is expected that by the year 2025, Chennai’s economy would grow to be the US $ 150 billion.

Thus, the humble place which had originated as a commercial warehouse has now grown to be a giant as a world-famous trading centre.
