It is likely that the second phase of Metro Rail project will incorporate a state-of-the-art technology using which trains can be operated for every once in 1.5 minutes.

The first phase of the Metro rail project of 45 km distance shall get over by December this year. Following this, the second phase of the project shall begin. This will cover 3 routes spread across 105 km encompassing Madhavaram, Mylapore, Siruseri, Koyambedu, Perumbakkam, Sholinganallur, and Vivekananda illam.

For this second phase of the project,. project report of estimated cost of Rs 85,047 crore is prepared and sent for approval from the Central Government.

Speaking about this, Metro rail officials say that the Centre`s approval is likely soon. The other preparatory works are being carried out. In a very few weeks  of getting approval from the centre, the works for this second phase of Metro rail works shall begin, they add.

There are many new changes in this second phase of the project such that 25 percent of overall cost can be cut. Nevertheless, there will be no compromise in service quality to the public.

While in the first phase, sand testing was done for every 50 km distance, this time, we have planned it for every 25 km, say officials.

The second phase shall include a state-of-the-art signalling technology using which trains can be operated for every once in 1.5 minutes instead of the present system that functions train for once in every 2.5 minutes.
