Posted on: 06/Feb/2018 3:21:42 PM
The operating domain of the CMDA (Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority) has been expanded to include Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, and the Taluks of Arakkonam and Nemili in Vellore district.

2 essential aspects – reducing the urban resident population in the Chennai Metro City and the streamlining of the very rapid urbanization in progress in the city, suburban areas demand immediate attention. In a similar vein, a 3rd aspect, improvement and facilities of infrastructure for the increasing population in the suburban areas, has also become an important issue.

Giving special consideration to the above aspects, the State Minister for Housing development at that time, Udumalai Radhakrishnan had informed last year that the domain of CMDA will be expanded to include the districts of Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Thiruvallur, and also the Arakkonam and Nemili Taluks in Vellore District. Thus CMDA domain will now cover an area of 8878 sq. km.

Accordingly, a Regional Strategy Plan will be prepared to confirm the inclusion of the areas as above, to evolve a uniform development plan in these areas, and select the urban centres and the economic development centres covered in the expanded region.

Factors like transport, the basic infrastructure requirement, environmental safety, and protection of the existing agricultural lands will be given extra focus. The minister had informed all requisite changes will be undertaken in order to strengthen the administration management of CMDA.

Subsequently, the activities for the expansion commenced. After meetings in several stages, the member secretary of the CMDA conducted a special meeting with the Chennai Metro Corporation officials.

Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam informed that the activities of the CMDA domain expansion have been completed. The government review is in progress. A government order will be released shortly on this.

In this situation, the concerned Government Order has been released now. It is mentioned in this announcement - The member secretary of CMDA submitted a detailed letter regarding the CMDA domain expansion to the state government. This was thoroughly reviewed by the state government. Now, the state government has accorded permission to include the additional areas to be included in CMDA domain. A detailed announcement will be made shortly in the Government Journal on this. Subsequently, the collectors of the districts of Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Vellore will have to release it again in the district journals. The director of translation should help release the translated version in Tamil.
