In Chennai city metro rail system is doing superbly and people find it safe and easier to travel to their destination by this metro rail. The news that has come out now is CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited is doing feasibility study to expand the metro rail network till Poonamallee. It must be noted that this expansion would be done under the 107.55 km phase 2 extension project.

It is now said that this expansion till Poonamallee would be of great benefit for the people living in the western suburbs in Chennai.

In less than 45 minutes of time the people living in Poonamallee would be able to reach the city and that would be fantastic. It is known that these people living in Poonamallee are finding it difficult to reach Chennai city as it takes long time but this issue would be overcome because of this expansion project on metro rail.

In the first quarter of this year detailed project report or DPR to connect Poonamallee from Koyambedu through Porur, Virugambakkam, Valasaravakkam of distances of 15km would be ready. This was confirmed by the officials of this metro rail. Additional cost of Rs 3850 crores would be spent on this extension project.

According to some officials of CMRL, this DPR would be ready in another 3 or 4 months of time and field study is taking place regarding this expansion.

It is important to mention here that the work to study the localities started once chief minister Mr E. Palaniswamy spoke at the state assembly in 2017. He spoke about the extension of 17km corridor 4 from CMBT to Light House up to Poonamallee. This would ease the traffic congestion in the areas located between those two above mentioned places. Places such as Virugambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Porur, Kaatupakkam, Kumananchavadi till Poonamallee bus depot etc would be benefitted as the traffic congestion would be reduced.

It must be noted that phase 2 has got 3 corridors Madhavaram- SIPCOT covering distance of 46.1 km with as many as 50 stations in corridor 3, Madhavaram- Sholinganallur covering a distance of 45.2 km with as many as 46 stations in corridor 5, in corridor 4 CMBT - Light House covering a distance of 17.1km is also there.

A metro rail official spoke about how DPR would be sent separately for sake of approvals and depending on that a final decision would be taken whether the extended line would be a part of phase 2 or it would a separate extension project.
