Kanchipuram is present at about 72 kms from the city of Chennai is well known. In this Kanchipuram there is a popular temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is important to mention here that this temple is one of the 5 major temples of Lord Shiva. This temple is also one of the Pancha Bootham Sthalams and it represents Earth.

Since 600 AD this Lord Ekambareswarar temple has been making its presence felt and is visited by many devotees. It is said that the Pallava kings were involved in the rebuilding of this temple. Later the Chola kings did their contributions in the temple construction.

Present on the land of 40 acres is this temple and there is no separate shrine for Goddess Parvati. In this aspect this temple differs from other Lord Shiva temples in Kanchipuram.

King Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara played great part in the construction of the rajagopuram that is of height of 57 metres. This rajagopuram is one of the tallest in South India.

It is said that Goddess Kamakshi performed penance for Lord Shiva. The interesting point here is Goddess Kamakshi stood on single leg under a mango tree here and performed penance.  Lord Shiva tried many things to test the penance of Goddess Kamakshi by sending fire and ganges etc but nothing could disturb Goddess Kamakshi’s penance for Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was highly impressed by this and married Goddess Kamakshi here.

People coming to this temple would be surprised to see a mango tree that is 3500 years old. The four branches of this tree represent four vedas such as Rig veda, Sama veda, Yajur veda and Atharva veda.

The presence of 5 spacious corridors and 1000 pillared hall are simply superb in this temple and located just opposite to the temple is temple tank or kampai theertha.

This temple is opened from 6 am to 12 and then from 4 pm till 8:30 pm daily.
