Prices of vegetables continue tumbling in Koyambedu market

The arrival of vegetables to the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market from other places has increased substantially since the last 4 weeks.
The truckloads of vegetables from the other states Karnataka and Andhra and also from the other districts of Tamil Nadu has increased. This has led to considerable fall in the prices of the vegetables.
As on yesterday (Sunday, 28th January), the prices of radish, cabbage, snake gourd, noolkol (khol rabi), and brinjal have come down to Rs. 5 per kg.
Tomato was sold at Rs. 6 per kg. Beetroot was sold at Rs. 7 per kg and potato at Rs. 9 per kg and beans at Rs, 12 per kg. Onion is sold at Rs. 30 per kg and the small (sambar) onions at Rs. 32 per kg. Okra (lady`s finger) is sold at Rs. 20 per kg.
The secretary of the Koyambedu flower, vegetables, and fruit traders association explained in this regard:
‘Earlier 350 truckloads of vegetables used to arrive in Koyambedu daily. Now, 450 truckloads of vegetables have started arriving at Koyambedu daily. Usually, an only lower quantity of vegetables used to arrive from the other parts of Tamil Nadu to Koyambedu daily. As the rainfall this season had been excellent, extra loads of vegetables are transported from Krishnagiri, Hosur, Panruti, Tindivanam, Ottanchathiram, and other areas to Koyambedu daily. As it is not wise to let them rot and go to waste, we are compelled to sell them at lower prices. Thus, the prices of most vegetables have come down.’
