In an effort to improve aircraft handling capacity, AAI or Airport Authority of India has begun conducting trials in Chennai. It is now said that on Thursday 11th January 2018 trials for the simultaneous operations of main runway and second runway was carried out here.

For a period of 3 months every day and for time duration of 55 minutes both main as well as second runways would be used for both landing and taking off. It must be noted that second runway had 8 departures and main runway had 9 arrivals and 5 departures.

The main benefits of cross runway operations are in the reduction of conflicts in the airspace plus in reducing the delay for departures. This would go on for three months and after that a decision to make the system permanent would be taken.

It is now revealed near the cargo terminal, completion of the straightening of the taxiway that is needed for smooth movement of flights must be done by the AAI and this work has to be done on both the runways. It is now said that 12 to 18 months of time would be needed for this work to be completed and exit taxiway work would begin.

Simultaneous take off and landing on the runways would be possible once when both the taxiways are ready.
