Villupuram Ranganatha Swamy Temple or Aadhi Thiruvarangam temple is one of the temples that were sung in high praises in many ancient Aazhwar verses related to 108 Divya Desams. The temple’s main deity is Lord Vishnu in the form of Ranganatha Swamy similar to Srirangam, Trichy. Rangavalli Thayar is the female deity of this temple.
Villupuram Ranganatha Swamy Temple is on the banks of Thenpennai River making it the locality’s holy water Chandra Pushkarani. Aadi Thiruvarangam is considered to be the first incarnation of Lord Vishnu making this temple more special in equal terms with Srirangam.
Legend
Somugan, a demon performed intense penance obtaining immortality, threatened the lives of many holy Sages and Devargal in the heaven. Somugan even imprisoned Brahma, seizing the Vedas from him. So the concern was informed to Lord Vishnu who announced the war on Somugan to destroy him. Lord Vishnu took the avatar of Ranganatha Swamy and destroyed the Asura, Somugan. So the temple is praised for this epic greatness of Lord Vishnu gaining the fame from this background of ancient history.

Temple Festivals: Saturdays of Purarttasi, Pournami and Vaikunda Ekadasi.
