Vegetable prices down in Koyambedu

As extra loads of vegetables have started arriving at the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market, the prices of vegetables have come down.
With the harvest being done at the end of the rainy season in the neighbouring states, it is reported that the harvest has been excellent with good yields. Because of this, the additional load of vegetables have been dispatched to the Koyambedu market in Chennai. This has led to a fall in the vegetable prices.
Tomato which was sold at Rs. 20 per kg, is now sold at Rs, 7 per kg. Cabbage sold at Rs. 6 Rs. 6 per kg. Radish is now sold at Rs. 8 per kg.
Small (sambar) onion is sold at Rs. 80 per kg. Beans and broad-beans are sold at Rs. 30 per kg. Ladies finger (okra - vendaikkai) is sold at Rs. 25 per kg. Snake gourd is sold at Rs. 15 per kg.
There is not much change in the price of some vegetables though – onion sells at Rs. 40 per kg, potato at Rs. 16 per kg, brinjal and bitter gourd at Rs. 25 per kg, carrot at Rs. 50 per kg, beetroot at Rs. 18 per kg, and green chilli at Rs. 23 per kg.
The vice-president of the Koyambedu flower, fruit, and vegetable traders’ association, P. Sukumar, explained in this regard that additional quantities of vegetables have started arriving from the neighbouring states of Andhra and Karnataka. So, tomato which used to come on 40 loads, now comes at 100 loads. This has immediately led to the prices of tomato coming down.
The prices of most other vegetables have also come down, It is expected that this trend will persist for the next 2 months.
