Warm and humid days to continue in Chennai

Chennai rains have been in the back seat ever since the departure of Cyclone Ockhi. In fact, the month of December has remained a dry one for the city except for the good spell of 65 mm that occurred on December 1.
The maximums due to the absence of rains are also witnessing a rising trend with the maximums settling between 30 and 33 degrees Celsius while minimums also spiking and settling in lower 20’s.
As of now also, no significant rains are anticipated over the capital of Tamil Nadu. However, as per Skymet Weather, Chennai generally receives rains either during the extreme weather events such as Cyclones or Depressions in Bay or due to the formation of a cyclonic circulation or the easterly flow of winds.
Skymet Weather predicts that for at least a week, significant rains are not anticipated over Chennai though due to the easterly flow of winds and being a coastal station, isolated light rains cannot be ruled out on December 15. Though chances of such light spells are very bleak. The day will continue to remain warm and humid with the partly cloudy sky.
This is the waxing and waning period of Northeast Monsoon which means that the Monsoon period becomes active for a few days and then become weak for the following few days. The same was seen during the Cyclone Ockhi when Northeast Monsoon was active in South India which is now on a weaker side.
Despite the absence of rains, Chennai rains are on the surplus end. Spanning from October 1 until December 6, Chennai has received 37% excess rains. Thus, in a nutshell, the season of Northeast Monsoon has remained satisfactory for Chennai.
