Weak phase of Northeast Monsoon continues, Chennai rains to remain on backseat

Posted on: 13/Dec/2017 10:37:20 AM
Ever since the beginning of December, Chennai has been witnessing absolutely dry weather conditions. Although, the city had witnessed heavy rains to the tune of 65 mm on December 1 but showers have remained absent since then.

In wake of this, maximum temperatures have risen over the state capital, leading to return of warm and humid weather.

Further also, weathermen are not predicting much changes in the prevailing weather conditions during the next few days. As of now, weather models are not indicating towards formation of any significant weather system in or around North Tamil Nadu that could revive Chennai rains.

A cyclonic circulation is marked over Comorin area along with easterly winds blowing over Chennai, however, it would not have any impact the weather over Chennai.

Rain and thundershowers of varying intensity would be confined to South Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Isolated light rains cannot be ruled out over North Tamil Nadu including but chances are quite bleak.

Chennai would continue with humid weather as maximum temperatures settling in lower 30s and minimum temperatures in lowers 20s. Evenings and nights would be fairly comfortable.

Northeast Monsoon remains subdued

After the departure of Cyclone Ockhi, Northeast Monsoon has been subdued over Peninsular India. In last few days, rain across the region has taken a backseat. In fact, revival of Monsoon surge is not seen anytime soon.

However, meteorologists state that waxing and waning of Monsoon is absolutely normal. Both Southwest and Northeast Monsoon become active for a few days and then go week for the following few days.

At the time of formation Cyclone Ockhi, Northeast Monsoon had been active to vigorous over southern parts of South India. Post that, in absence of any weather system, the Monsoon has been weak.

This year, Northwest Monsoon had made delayed onset on October 27 but had managed to remain active during most days of November. As a result, November ended on a surplus note for Chennai.

So far in December, Chennai has recorded mere 65 mm of rain as compared to the monthly average rainfall of 177.4 mm. However, we still have over two weeks to go and hopeful that the city would be able to surpass its monthly mean.
