Western Disturbance move from Mediterranean Sea to North India during winter. Its nothing but systems at 5 km levels above sea level. Mostly this system (Western Disturbance) will pass through Kashmir / Himachal. This will inturn induce a upper air circulation at low levels (1.5 kms or below) which will lie south of Western Disturbance over Punjab / Haryana like that. This circulation will inturn cause a trough or Line of Wind Discontinuity to form in Central Indiia to South India /Tamil Nadu. Hope you can visuvalize it. See the images u will understand.
Line of Wind Discontinuity Rains in Tamil Nadu from Today and Tomorrow. The LWD disappears tomorrow

You can see the image how easterly winds from Bay of Bengal move into Tamil Nadu and stops mid way and the other side from Arabian sea the wind direction is different. This is how we should identify the Line of Wind Discontinuity. This causes instability in atmosphere and creates rains. Though the Discontinuity is from maharashtra, the rains will be limited from South Interior Karnataka to interior Tamil Nadu where there is moisture content. These are temporary rains. Sometime the Line of Wind Discontinuity lasts for days. Sometimes like the present instance, it lasts only a day and half. Tomorrow the Line of Wind Discontinuity disappears. So will the rains in the western interiors. Its a one day affair, so lets enjoy what the nature gives us.

Please note LWD rains will be accompained with Lightning and Thunder as the unstability will be more. Remember the precaution post i have put up on Lightning and Thunder. In February March and April, this is common as the wind direction transition takes place. So kindly remember when i put up LWD rains in the coming months.

Parts of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Theni, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Thoothukudi will get rains. Kindly note it wont be widespread but many places in this region will get rains. Tricky area Sivagiri in Erode will get rains. Udumalpettai too has chance of rains. Palani too will get rains. Pollachi belt hit or miss rains. Parts of Bangalore and Mysore too will get rains.
Chennai needs to wait further. An easterly wave is coming next week. We should get some rains from it.
